Here’s an update on our sustainability efforts at Machynlleth Comedy Festival!
Travel
Traveling by electric car to the festival? There are charging points for 8 vehicles in Maengwyn Street Car Park. It’s important to make sure you have sufficient battery charge for your journey and advisable to recharge as fully as possible before getting to town where demand is likely to be much greater over the festival weekend. You can use a mapping service such as zap-map.comto find other nearby charge points.
Are you travelling from London? Did you know that open return train tickets from Marylebone via Birmingham Moor Street (and a short walk to New Street) are a third of the price than from Euston? Have a look at www.thetrainline.com
We’re continuing our partnership with the local community composting scheme, Criw Compostio, who collect compostable food waste from our food and drink traders as well as our volunteer kitchen and production office. This is turned into compost for horticultural projects in Machynlleth!
We’ve also teamed up with Y Pantri / Machynlleth Food Surplus to collect food that would have otherwise gone to waste, and whilst it’s brilliant that this food wasn’t wasted, we’re working with our traders to better estimate the amount of food needed for the festival to reduce food surplus for future years.
Power
In 2025 we experimented with solar and battery power at the Owain Glyndwr courtyard and the campsite. This worked well in the courtyard, but we needed more power at the campsite, so this year it will be powered by generators run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) which emits 90% less greenhouse gases than diesel!
Waste
This year we are going 100% single use plastic free in the public areas. (We’re working on plastic free bar suppliers!)
Help us keep create clean waste streams by using the appropriate bins – we have glass, cans, plastic, card/paper, general waste and now, compostables which can take food and compostable plates/cutlery!
Cups
We know the branded cups are really popular but unfortunately we can’t justify putting more plastic into the world as we try to reduce our footprint. We’re now hiring a lot of blank cups so that they can be reused by other events. Don’t forget to bring your cups back to the bar to get your £2 per cup deposit back!
If you’re after a Mach memento, we have limited edition prints for you to buy at the Festival Box Office!
